A large, dry deciduous tree to over 20 m (65 ft.) tall, with a thick, bottle-shaped trunk to 5 m (16 ft.) or more in diameter. The attractive, large, reddish flowers open at night. It is found in northwestern Madagascar in seasonally moist, dry deciduous forest. In cultivation it does best in the dry tropics in USDA Zones 10 and above. Soak seeds in water for a day before sowing in a well draining substrate.
