Iriartea deltoidea (Costa Rica)

Copa Palm

For many enthusiasts the Iriartea is the grandest of the many stunning palms of South America. This tall and elegant plant has a slightly swollen, grey or white trunk; plumose leaves with leaflets very neatly arranged in four planes; and giant, horn-shaped inflorescence-bracts, which easily identify it. Common in its native home, it is almost unknown in cultivation and should be much more widely grown in warm subtropical and tropical areas.

...very easy to germinate and need up to 1 month to sprout.
This palm is one of the easiest to germinate once you realize they like bottom heat. Soaked seeds for 3 days, changing water every day. Soaked in fungicide for a couple hours and place in ziplock with peat/perlite mix. Very slow to send up first shoot, but the root system is extensive. One month to germinate with bottom heat, 3-6 months without. 100% germination within one month...Great palm tree and should be more widely planted!!!

...very easy to germinate and need up to 1 month to sprout.
This is a very easy palm to germinate. With fresh seeds it is possible to get over 90% germination rate. Seeds were soaked overnight in tap water and then placed in a mixture of perlite and peat-moss and then kept continually moist. The community pot was placed in a shade house where avg. daily temperatures hovered around 28 deg C. However, from germination to appearance of the first leaf can take several months

The Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms is the definitive account of all palms that can be grown for ornamental and economic use. Palms are often underutilized as a result of their unfamiliarity—even to tropical gardeners. To help introduce these valuable plants to a new audience, the authors have exhaustively documented every genus in the palm family.
825 species are described in detail, including cold hardiness, water needs, height, and any special requirements. Generously illustrated with more than 900 photos, including photos of several palm species that have never before appeared in a general encyclopedia, The Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms is as valuable as an identification guide as it is a practical handbook. Interesting snippets of history, ethnobotany, and biology inform the text and make this a lively catalog of these remarkable plants.
