Ravenea sp. Anjouan
Anjouan Majesty Palm
The seeds of this newly discovered palm were collected on the slopes
of a very remote mountain in the center of Anjouan Island (Comoro Islands).
It looks like a small R. hildebandtii, and grows at more than 1200 m altitude,
sometimes in full sun. (R. hildebrandtii prefers deep shade). The seeds
are half the size of R. hildebrandtii, round and light gray-brown as opposed
to oval and dark brown. Another stunning difference from R. hildebrandtii
is length of the female infloresence which, in excess of 2.5 m, is twice
as long as that of R. hildebrandtii. It is very likely that these palms
represent a new, undescribed species that is not yet in cultivation.
