A beautiful, large, evergreen tree native to forests in tropical and southern Africa with superb, glossy dark green, pinnate foliage with large, broad leaflets to 21 cm long and round fruits that contain several very colorful, edible black seeds rich in oil, covered with bright red arils. The pinkish wood is used for furniture and carving and the tree is important in traditional medicine. In South Africa it is a very popular ornamental shade tree and is suitable for warm temperate and tropical climates in USDA Zones 10 and above. Young trees also make good indoor plants. The seeds germinate quickly and easily.
